Swim Meets 101

Attending a summer swim meet is an exciting experience, but it’s important to follow proper etiquette to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event for swimmers, coaches, officials, and spectators. Arrive on time and be prepared by checking the meet schedule in advance. Swimmers should be ready for warm-ups and listening to their coaches.  Parents and spectators should show good sportsmanship by cheering respectfully for all swimmers and avoiding disruptive behavior. It’s also important to keep the pool deck and surrounding areas clean, respecting both the facility and fellow attendees. If volunteering, be punctual and attentive to assigned duties, as meets rely on parent participation to run efficiently.

Expect a fast-paced yet structured environment at a swim meet. Races are organized by event, heat, and lane assignments, with swimmers required to report to the designated staging area ("Clerk of Course" when their event is called. Coaches will provide guidance and feedback, but swimmers should take responsibility for knowing their event numbers and being ready when it's time to compete.

Weather can be unpredictable, so bring essentials such as sunscreen, extra towels, snacks, and water to stay comfortable throughout the day. Above all, summer swim meets are about teamwork, competition, and fun—so embrace the experience, support your team, and enjoy the excitement of race day!
